(Kumaresan Aramugam Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: A Penang assemblyman is up in arms over the lack of action against a popular eatery on the island after the alleged discovery of a cockroach leg in food served by the restaurant. Batu Uban assemblyman A Kumaresan said the discovery was made by one of his staff, and that an official complaint had been lodged with health authorities and the Penang Island City Council (MBPP). “However, to this day, I was informed that no stern action has been taken by the authorities. Only routine checks were conducted while the restaurant’s cleanliness was apparently satisfactory, so no further action could be taken. “Why was no compound or closure order issued?” he said in a Facebook post, adding that there were pictures clearly showing the cockroach leg in the food. The PKR man said other, lesser known food outlets had faced action like 14-day closures over similar cases, adding that food hygiene was a crucial matter of public interest. When contacted, Penang health executive councillor Daniel Gooi said he was seeking further information on the case from the state health department. FMT has also reached out to MBPP for comment.
