Much like this image, festive repertoire is increasingly being filled with AI-generated and algorithm-influenced content. (Bernama / AI-generated pic) KUALA LUMPUR: As Aidilfitri approaches each year, Malaysia’s music scene fills with new festive songs aimed at capturing the joy of the season. But despite the steady stream of upbeat releases on social media, music experts say many modern Raya songs feel rushed and lack the emotional depth that has made older classics endure. Muhammad Fazli Taib Saearani, dean of the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, said a memorable Raya song should reflect the spirit of joy, forgiveness and togetherness associated with Aidilfitri. “Although the musical arrangements of classic Raya songs are relatively simple, that simplicity must allow deeper emotions to resonate with listeners,” he told Bernama. He said older songs often draw strongly from Malay musical identity and traditional pop, giving them a nostalgic quality that endears them to listeners. “One example is ‘Suasana Hari Raya’ performed by Anuar Zain and Ellina. The melody is simple yet emotionally powerful, while the lively arrangement captures the festive joy of celebrating with family,” he said. Mohd Azam Sulong. According to lyricist Mohd Azam Sulong, the enduring appeal of Raya classics lies in strong melodies and memorable hooks. Musical arrangements should complement the melody and lyrics, blending traditional and modern elements so the emotional message is clearly conveyed, he said. “Raya songs do not simply follow trends – they have to build a deeper emotional connection and remain relevant across generations,” Azam added. Also known as Dr Azam Dungun, he has written lyrics for songs such as “Nian Di Hati” and “Seloka Budi”, sung by Siti Nurhaliza. Hafiz Hamidun. Meanwhile, singer and composer Hafiz Hamidun said listening habits today also shape how Raya songs are produced. “Today’s generation tends to prefer music that is quick and immediately appealing to the ear, with concise and straightforward lyrics,” said the “Zikir Dikir” singer. He noted that these days, artificial intelligence, digital algorithms and audience retention tend to influence the production of modern songs. Nevertheless, Hafiz, who has been in the industry since 2002, said new Raya songs still have the potential to resonate with younger listeners. “I will always appreciate old Raya songs. At the same time, I support the production of new songs that suit the tastes of today’s audience,” he said. Fairuz Selamat. Singer Fairuz Selamat, too, gave his two cents, saying Raya songs, regardless of genre, must carry a clear festive and cultural identity. “I don’t mind if it is an old or new song, modern or classic, upbeat or slow – as long as when we close our eyes, we know it is a Raya song,” he said. Fairuz, the former vocalist of the group Q-Face, is best known for songs such as “Izinkanlah” and “Cinta Tak Sehaluan”.
