(MCMC pic) PETALING JAYA: A viral video of another man allegedly stepping on the Quran is an old video that involves a Singaporean, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said today. MCMC also said preliminary investigations found that the incident had occurred in Singapore. It said the uploading of the old video on various social media platforms had sparked public concern, prompting the commission to take action to prevent its spread. “MCMC is working with social media platform providers, particularly Threads, Facebook and TikTok, to ensure that adequate action is taken, including restricting access to that video in Malaysia. “The spread of content touching on religious sensitivities and potentially threatening the harmony of our multiracial society is irresponsible and action can be taken under existing laws,” it said in a statement. The resurfacing of the old video came after a Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah student was arrested last week for allegedly stepping on a copy of the Quran. The student is under remand until tomorrow, while the police’s probe paper was referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers today. The case is being investigated for defiling a sacred object with the intent to insult religion. The university is also conducting an internal investigation into the student for sharing content on sensitive issues on social media.
