In 2023, former Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein (left) was suspended for six years, and ex-Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin was sacked for allegedly breaching party discipline. PETALING JAYA: The applications of several former Umno leaders to rejoin the party or have their suspensions lifted will be discussed at the Umno Supreme Council meeting on April 17. Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin said those who submitted applications include former vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein and former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin. However, Khaled said a decision on the matter may not necessarily be announced at the meeting, reported Utusan Malaysia. He said the party is still receiving applications, with no deadline set for former leaders or members wishing to return under its “Rumah Bangsa” initiative. “We believe there will be a positive decision,” he said. Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi previously said the party’s doors were “unconditionally” open to former members, and that all mistakes and differences would be “forgiven” in the spirit of Ramadan. Sembrong MP Hishammuddin, who was suspended for six years in 2023 for allegedly breaching party discipline, has officially requested that his suspension be lifted. Khairy, a former minister who held various portfolios, has also applied to return to Umno. He was sacked from the party in January 2023 for breaching party discipline during the 2022 general election.
