(The Royal Johor Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: Tunku Aminah Sultan Ibrahim has been appointed chairman of U Mobile Sdn Bhd effective March 13. In a statement, U Mobile said its founder, Vincent Tan, had relinquished his position as chairman effective March 12 and would now serve as adviser to the board of directors. Tunku Aminah’s appointment comes as Mawar Setia Sdn Bhd increased its shareholding in U Mobile to more than 50% following the completion of a share sale with Singapore Technologies Telemedia Pte Ltd (STT). Mawar Setia, an investment holding company founded by Tan and Tunku Aminah, now holds a controlling stake in the telecommunications company. U Mobile said Tunku Aminah brought extensive leadership and governance experience, having led private organisations across various industries and served on the boards of multiple public and private companies. In the statement, Tan said the changes in U Mobile’s boardroom reflected its commitment to building digital infrastructure that was reliable, scalable, and delivered on time. “Our focus is to strengthen governance and long-term funding support so the management team can accelerate rollout and meet the coverage expectations set for the country’s second 5G network,” said Tan. “We intend to back this with sustained investment discipline and operational focus as U Mobile advances its next stage of development. “I am delighted to share that U Mobile has been progressing well and is ahead of deployment schedule.” U Mobile, which was selected to implement the nation’s second 5G network in November 2024, launched its 5G services on Jan 26. Putrajaya agreed to allow a second 5G network after shares in Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) were sold to Maxis, CelcomDigi, U Mobile, and YTL Communications. The government, via the Minister of Finance Incorporated, currently holds a 41.67% stake in DNB following U Mobile’s exit last May. The three remaining telcos – CelcomDigi, Maxis and YTL – hold 19.44% each.
