(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: A think tank has cautioned against calls for Malaysia to take a more aggressive stand over the conflict in the Middle East. The International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies Malaysia (IAIS) said diplomacy, rather than confrontation, offered the best pathway to reducing tensions and achieving lasting peace in the region. In a statement, the institute said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s direct engagement with leaders from key countries could help open channels for dialogue and a potential ceasefire. It added that such diplomatic efforts could strengthen unity among Muslim nations while positioning Malaysia as a credible mediator in talks with Gulf states, Iran and global powers. “Proposals for Malaysia to adopt a more aggressive posture must be weighed carefully. Effective diplomacy is not defined by the loudest voice but by the ability to foster trust and open dialogue among adversaries. “Civil society and all stakeholders need to support Malaysia’s diplomatic initiatives, recognising that constructive engagement can yield outcomes far more enduring than polemics. The diligent approach of diplomacy builds the foundations of peace,” IAIS said. It added that Malaysia’s reputation as a moderate and inclusive nation enables it to serve as a bridge among Southeast Asian countries, the Muslim world and the wider international community.
