A student was found lying below Block A of SMK Taman Ria Jaya, Sungai Petani, with a broken arm, shortly after an assembly yesterday. PETALING JAYA: Neither bullying nor criminal activity caused a Form 5 student to fall from a school building in Sungai Petani yesterday, according to the Kedah education department’s preliminary findings. The department said the injured student was found lying below Block A of SMK Taman Ria Jaya shortly after an assembly. “Initial investigations found no elements of bullying or crime as no other students or staff were at the upper floor of the block at the time. All were at the assembly area. “However, further investigations are being carried out to determine the actual cause,” it was quoted by Berita Harian as saying. The department also said based on preliminary checks of CCTV footage, the student is believed to have fallen from the third floor of the school building. The student, who sustained injuries, including a broken arm, was sent to the hospital for further treatment. The student’s parents were immediately notified by the school. The department also said it took the matter seriously and would cooperate fully with police. “The department will not compromise on any elements of bullying or crime in schools, should any be found,” it said.
