(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) has urged all water service operators to ensure adequate stockpiles of essential chemicals and mechanical and electrical spare parts for at least the next three to six months in light of potential disruptions due to the Middle East war. The country’s water services regulator said it is closely monitoring potential risks to the national water supply industry amid ongoing tensions affecting global trade routes in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that prolonged instability could disrupt key supply chains. SPAN said the water services industry is particularly exposed to international market fluctuations in fuel and logistics, as well as the supply of spare parts and treatment chemicals used in plants and distribution systems. “At present, no significant impact has been observed among operators,” SPAN said in a statement. “Fuel cost increases remain under control following earlier government measures, and prices for spare parts and treatment materials have yet to show notable spikes. “Any sudden spike in costs will affect the operations of water service providers,” it warned. SPAN called on consumers to use water and energy responsibly, especially during festive periods such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri and in light of ongoing global uncertainties.
