Retailer fined RM5,000 over tobacco display breach

PETALING JAYA: A retailer in Johor Bahru was fined RM5,000 by the magistrates’ court for displaying tobacco products in breach of regulations. Harian Metro reported that SK Grocers, represented by its owner in his 50s, pleaded guilty. Magistrate Nur Fatin Farid ordered that a warrant of levy be issued if the fine is not paid. According to the charge, the company displayed tobacco products at a shop in Susur 4, Jalan Tun Abdul Razak, at 5.20pm on Oct 1 last year, in breach of Regulation 6(1) of the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health (Control of Sale) Regulations 2024. Under the regulations, tobacco and vape products cannot be openly displayed and must be kept in closed cabinets to limit visibility. The prosecution was led by Johor health department prosecuting officer Fairuz Hamdan.
