A viral video showed police detaining a motorcyclist during an operation in Kuala Krai, Kelantan. PETALING JAYA: Police have launched an investigation following the spread of a viral video showing a policeman getting into a scuffle with a motorcyclist during an operation in Kuala Krai, Kelantan yesterday. Kuala Krai police chief Mazlan Mamat said crowds had gathered at the Batu Balai and Guchil traffic lights to watch fireworks being set off on Friday night. They were told to disperse at midnight but refused to comply. He said that around 2am on Saturday, several motorcyclists and drivers started driving dangerously and racing around the intersection, prompting the police to conduct spot checks on the vehicles. “One motorcyclist tried to avoid the police checks, leading to him crashing into another motorcycle and then falling over. A scuffle broke out when a policeman tried to detain the motorcyclist, leaving the policeman with injuries. “After the incident, a group of bystanders started harassing the policeman. Some of them then tried to provoke him and also threatened him. “These provocative actions raised tensions at the scene. This was recorded and spread online. However, officers on duty defused the situation professionally to prevent any untoward incident,” he said in a statement. Mazlan said the police operation ended around 6am, resulting in three cars and three motorcycles being seized, 34 traffic summonses issued, and two people arrested. Police are still searching for others believed to have been involved in the incident, while investigations are being held under Sections 186 and 353 of the Penal Code for obstructing and using criminal force against a public servant. Mazlan urged the public not to speculate or spread unverified information online, and called for those with information to assist in investigations.
