GEORGE TOWN: Bukit Tambun assemblyman Goh Choon Aik was sworn in as Penang’s trade and community unity committee chairman today. Goh, who is also state PKR deputy chief, took his oath of office before Penang governor Ramli Ngah Talib at the governor’s official residence, Seri Mutiara, this morning. He was appointed to replace his party colleague Fahmi Zainol, who was dropped from the state executive council at the central PKR leadership’s request in light of a domestic abuse case. Fahmi was agrotechnology, food security and cooperative development committee chairman. Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow made a minor reshuffle of his executive council’s portfolios, with the agrotechnology and food security portfolio handed over to Rashidi Zinol, whose trade portfolio was given to Goh. Penang deputy chief minister I Mohamad Abdul Hamid was meawhile tasked with overseeing cooperative development and his unity portfolio was given to Goh. Speaking to reporters after taking his oath of office, Goh thanked Chow for entrusting him with the given portfolios, and expressed appreciation to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim for nominating him for the position. “I do not have much time (before the state government’s term ends), therefore I will carry out the trust and responsibility given with full dedication. “I believe that sustainable economic development and harmonious social relations are essential foundations to ensure that Penang continues to thrive as a progressive, stable and prosperous state,” said the two-term assemblyman. Chow said Goh’s portfolios were crucial given the current economic environment, which he described as challenging for both small and medium-sized enterprises and major enterprises. “Community unity has become an important issue as well, as the country is facing issues and activities that jeopardise unity and racial harmony,” said the chief minister.
