KUCHING (Dec 20): Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong has criticised the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) for what she described as an unwelcoming reaction to the appointment of Mas Gading MP Mordi Bimol as a federal deputy minister.
“The appointment of YB Mordi Bimol as a federal deputy minister should be a moment of pride for Sarawak,” said the Democratic Action Party (DAP) lawmaker in a statement.
Yong noted that many Sarawakians, particularly from the Dayak community, welcomed the appointment as recognition of a capable Sarawakian leader rising to serve at the federal level and to help advance the state’s interests.
However, she said statements issued by SUPP leaders suggested the party was unhappy with the appointment, alleging it had been politicised because Mordi is from DAP.
“Why can’t SUPP be proud of our own Sarawakian Dayak rising leader? Why must SUPP continue to undermine Dayak representation and leadership whenever it does not fit their narrow political agenda?”
Yong further claimed the reaction reflected discomfort with seeing Dayak leaders attain positions of influence, particularly those who are outspoken and independent.
She added that Sarawak needed more leaders like Mordi, whom she described as willing to speak up, work hard, and represent the people regardless of race or party affiliation.
“Attacking a Sarawakian Dayak leader for being appointed deputy minister only shows how out of touch SUPP is with the aspirations of Sarawakians today,” she said.
On Thursday, SUPP Stakan chairman Dato Sim Kiang Chiok criticised Mordi’s appointment, calling it a clear U-turn on DAP’s 2022 promise to avoid seeking executive positions.
He said the reversal raises questions about DAP’s credibility and highlighted unfulfilled pledges, including oil and gas royalties and UEC recognition, while contrasting it with GPS’s consistent stance on Sarawak’s rights and autonomy.
