MIRI (Dec 20): Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) hopes to be allocated at least three or four State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats to contest in, particularly in rural areas, following the creation of 17 new DUN constituencies in Sarawak.

Its president, Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai, said this in his speech at the PRS Northern Zone Pre-Christmas Dinner held here on Friday.

John, who is also Deputy Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Legal Affairs and Native Customs), Deputy Minister for Arts and Culture Sarawak, and Kakus assemblyman, said that as a party rooted in rural areas, PRS fully understands the needs and shortcomings of basic infrastructure in the interior, such as roads, electricity supply and clean water.

“Therefore, I call on all PRS members to give their full commitment to the party, to remain united, to support one another, and to work closely with Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS),” he said.

Meanwhile, John stressed the importance of strengthening party membership by targeting at least 4,000 to 5,000 members in each division.

He also touched on the increase in allowances for Community Leaders and Chiefs (KMKK) as well as councillors, and informed that the minimum qualification for the appointment of new ‘tuai rumah’ has been set at at least the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM).

Touching on the pre-Christmas dinner held, he said it was not only meant to celebrate Christmas, but also served as a platform to engage with grassroots communities and to strengthen ties between party leaders and members.

Meanwhile, PRS Central Youth chief and Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang who also spoke at the dinner said the Sarawak Budget tabled earlier reflected that the state is on the right track towards achieving developed region status by 2030.

He also emphasised the importance of mutual understanding among party members and the role of youth as future leaders of PRS.

Also present were PRS vice-president, who is also Deputy Minister of Digital and Hulu Rajang MP, Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong; Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon; Political Secretaries to the Sarawak Premier Dato Nyomek Nyeap, Pandang Semat, and Susan Clement Ingun.

Others in attendance included PRS Marudi chairman and the dinner’s organising chairman Councillor Peter Sujar Chambai and Miri Resident Galong Luang.
