KUCHING (Dec 20): Sarawak is cultivating a culture of environmental responsibility, with students, teachers, and local communities demonstrating that changes in mindset and daily habits are crucial for sustainable waste management and long-term nation-building, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
Speaking at the School Recycling Campaign for the Southern Zone’s prize-giving ceremony on Friday, Dr Sim highlighted the remarkable growth in school participation and community involvement in recycling programmes.
“This year, 139 schools took part, up from 90 last year, collectively collecting 484,792.43 kilogrammes of recyclable materials — nearly 500 tonnes — marking a 43.5 per cent increase in collection compared to 2024,” he said during his speech at the Sarawak State Library.
The Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG) stressed that these efforts are part of a broader push to build a sustainable Sarawak.
“What you are doing is not just for competition. You are contributing to a cleaner, healthier Sarawak.
“Less waste ends up in our landfills, reducing costs and environmental impact. This is nation-building in action,” he added.

Dr Sim also explained that the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) initiative has evolved into a more comprehensive eight-point framework, which now includes Repurpose, Recover, Rethink, Repair, and Refuse ― highlighting that recycling is as much about behavioural change as it is about waste collection.
He emphasised the importance of instilling environmental consciousness from a young age and the key role of teachers and schools in shaping future generations.
Dr Sim encouraged proper waste segregation and reducing plastic and foam usage, noting that sustainable practices start with small actions at home, school, and in public spaces.
“By caring for our environment and embracing sustainable practices, we are contributing to the health, happiness, and future of Sarawak.
“Your actions today shape the Sarawak of tomorrow,” he added.
Also present was MPHLG permanent secretary Datu Elizabeth Loh.
