KUCHING (Dec 19): Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Kuching Youth is ready to help students and communities to ensure the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) translates into real opportunities for Anak Sarawak.

SUPP Kuching Youth chief Nicholas Wung said members are prepared to work particularly in underserved areas.

“SUPP Kuching Youth stands ready to help. We will collaborate with schools, community leaders, and the institutions to host briefings and clinics so that eligible students, especially those from lower-income families, are not left behind,” he said in a statement today.

This follows the launch of FTES by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on Thursday.

Wung said FTES is a significant step forward in building a skilled, future‑ready generation.

According to him, the scheme, which funds tuition and provides living support for eligible students at Sarawak‑owned institutions, aligns with the state’s ambition to develop world‑class talent and reach developed status by 2030.

Wung urged the implementing agency to release a simple guide explaining eligibility criteria; how to apply through each participating institution; what documents are required; and key dates for the FTES.

“This should be available online and in print, in Bahasa Malaysia, English, and major local languages, so parents and students can act with confidence,” he suggested.

“FTES is good news for young Sarawakians. When the cost barrier falls, more youth can choose degrees in fields such as STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), law, accounting, finance, and psychology, and contribute meaningfully to Sarawak’s economy and communities.”

Under the FTES, tuition fees are covered for approved undergraduate programmes at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, Curtin University Malaysia, i-CATS University College, and the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) for intakes beginning in 2026.

When launching the FTES, Abang Johari had said 4,693 Sarawakian students will begin their undergraduate studies next year through the scheme.

The Premier also announced that the Sarawak government has allocated RM250 million for FTES, which covers 64 programmes.
