KUCHING (Dec 18): Sarawak tenpin bowling star Lavinia Kho Jia Jie closed out a remarkable season in spectacular fashion, clinching a double title triumph at the Storm Milo U22 International Junior All-Stars Bowling Championship 2025 at Sunway Megalanes in Petaling Jaya.

Widely regarded as a benchmark event for elite junior bowlers, the year-ending championship once again lived up to its reputation as one of the toughest competitions on the Under-21 circuit.

Nearly 1,000 participants from powerhouses such as South Korea, Japan, Singapore, the Philippines, Taiwan, Australia, and across Malaysia converged for this rigorous test of skill, stamina, and mental strength.

For Sarawak, the tournament was also a crucial measure of the effectiveness of its development programme.

The Amateur Tenpin Bowling Association of Sarawak (ABAS) fielded a strong 30-member squad across multiple age and graded categories, reaffirming its commitment to competing for honours rather than mere participation.

Lavinia emerged as the standout performer, claiming both the Girls’ Open and Girls’ Super Junior titles, while also finishing second runner-up in the Girls’ Super Junior Singles.

Her achievements crowned a successful campaign for Sarawak, which also saw Gillian Lim Siew Giok finish first runner-up in the Girls’ Super Junior, Claudia Kumang Jakson win the Girls’ Graded Singles and Eldred Kho Yek Zhen take the Boys’ Graded Singles crown.

Sarawak head coach Angelo Koay hailed the results as a reflection of the state’s growing depth and structure in tenpin bowling.

He credited strong institutional support, committed parents and coaches, and the Sarawak Research and Training Centre (SRTC), introduced in 2024, which has enhanced preparation through data-driven analysis and video assessment.

For Lavinia, the double victory was both exhausting and rewarding. After 12 demanding games in the Girls’ Open Masters Finals, she maintained her intensity for another 10 games in the Super Junior event.

“Being able to sustain that level surprised me, but it also made me proud,” she said.

“The Junior All-Stars are never easy, and the field is always world-class.”

With 2025 behind her, Lavinia has already set her sights on 2026 and her final SUKMA outing, determined to give back to the state that launched her career.

Grit, resilience, and an unyielding fighting spirit — Lavinia’s season-ending double strike embodied the very best of Sarawak bowling.
