KUCHING (Dec 18): Repair works on a sinking section of road off Jalan Datuk Mohd Musa have yet to commence as several factors need to be taken into consideration, said Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS).
MPKS explained that it received a complaint from residents of Lorong Taman APT 2 on Dec 2 and conducted an initial inspection on the same day.
The inspection found cracks on the road surface adjacent to a monsoon drain along the stretch of Jalan Datuk Mohd Musa.
According to MPKS, preliminary investigations indicated that the structure of the drain wall had been compromised by strong water flow through twin culverts from the Muara Tuang Army Camp, which weakened the foundation of the wall.
“Repair works have not been carried out as several factors must first be considered, including the need for a strata soil and rock report for the affected area, as well as the procurement process under disaster allocation provisions.
“The council assured the public that it remains attentive to complaints and incidents, and encouraged residents to liaise directly with MPKS on matters related to its services,” MPKS said in a statement.
The council said it carried out follow-up site visits on Dec 5 and 6 to gather data and determine the scope of emergency works.
During this period, MPKS also consulted relevant agencies and sought technical advice to better understand the situation.
As an interim safety measure, warning signs and safety tape were used to cordon off the affected area on Dec 8.
On Dec 9, MPKS officers visited the site and met with residents to explain the situation and outline the steps being taken by the council, including assisting a resident with tree trimming works.
A further follow-up visit was conducted on Dec 15 by the councillor responsible for the area to assess the situation and brief affected property owners on the actions required.
On Dec 16, Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen’s special assistant Michael Kong urged authorities to take immediate action over the sinking road issue amid growing safety concerns among nearby residents.
Kong also called for a more proactive approach from authorities.
