Tan notes that the recognition of the UEC has been delayed for years, despite the system operating stably for decades.
MIRI (Dec 18): Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Piasau Branch publicity secretary and Miri City councillor, Tan Lek Jin, has urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to put an end to the politicisation of race and education issues and to provide a clear policy direction on the recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).
In a statement, Tan said repeated attempts by certain political actors in Peninsular Malaysia to stoke racial sentiments have undermined national unity and social stability, describing such actions as irresponsible and inconsistent with the principles of inclusive governance.
“The deliberate manipulation of sensitive racial issues must end immediately,” he said.
Tan noted that the recognition of the UEC has been delayed for years, despite the system operating stably for decades.
He added that the UEC curriculum and examination standards are widely acknowledged by higher education institutions worldwide.
“Any attempt to obscure the core issue by stirring racial sentiments is an irresponsible act that jeopardises students’ future and undermines public trust,” he said.
Addressing the Prime Minister directly, Tan urged Anwar to act decisively on the long-standing for UEC recognition, ensuring that the issue is no longer treated as a casualty of political manoeuvring.
He emphasised that officially recognising the UEC would neither threaten the national education system nor infringe upon any community’s rights.
Instead, it would help retain talent, boost Malaysia’s competitiveness, and reflect the country’s diversity and inclusiveness.
“If the Madani government seeks to earn the people’s trust, it must translate its commitments into concrete action rather than mere rhetoric,” he added.
Tan also lauded Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his consistent support of Chinese education and independent secondary schools through sustained funding.
He described Abang Johari’s pragmatic approach as a model for coexistence in a plural education system.
Tan stressed that the nation’s future should not be held hostage by racial politics, calling on all political leaders to return to rational discourse, prioritise long-term national interests, cease exploiting racial issues, and immediately recognise the UEC to ensure a fairer educational future for the next generation.
