MIRI (Dec 18): Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Lawas has voiced concerns over the worsening mobile phone and internet connectivity in the district, saying many residents are affected.

PKR Lawas division chief Zahid Matserudin said the party has received numerous complaints about weak and unstable phone and internet signals, a problem he claimed persisted for years without proper resolution.

“People on the ground are telling us that the signal is not only weak and unreliable, but Lawas still does not have access to 5G services,” he said in a statement.

Zahid noted that despite Lawas being a strategic northern Sarawak district and an important gateway to Sabah and Brunei, its communications infrastructure remains far from adequate.

“The lack of reliable internet and 5G affects many aspects of daily life, including business, online learning, government services, and potential future investment in the area,” he said, citing Kampung Sualai among the villages facing poor coverage.

He urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), as well as state and federal governments and telecommunications companies, to provide explanations and take immediate action.

“Without serious and well-planned measures, the development gap between Lawas and other districts will continue to widen,” he warned.
