Heidi holds her newly launched book ‘Sarawak—The Story of Our Food’ at the launch event.
KUCHING (Dec 18): Local author Heidi Munan launched her latest book ‘Sarawak — The Story of Our Food’ on Wednesday, tracing the history and evolution of the state’s unique food culture.
Speaking at the launch, Heidi said the book takes readers on a culinary journey from Niah Cave through the centuries, exploring how traders, sailors, population movements, and faraway empires influenced local cuisine.
“The book does not focus on recipes but on what people actually prepare for themselves. It reflects how food practices, like history and life, are constantly evolving,” she explained.
Heidi highlighted how traditional methods of sourcing and preparing food — such as women gathering vegetables or catching small fish — connect to broader cultural and historical contexts.
The book also covers modern developments, including Sarawak’s growing coffee culture, food delivery services, and the transformation of simple local dishes into gourmet creations.
Sarawak — The Story of Our Food is available for purchase at Mucow Books Company (delivery available via Philippa Munan on 011-16053616 or mucowbookscompany@gmail.com) and at outlets including Brooke Museums, Borneo Cultures Museum gift shop, Telang Usan Hotel, Sarawak Cultural Village, Meritin Hotel, and Ithaca Books at Think & Tink.
