(20th Century Fox pic) PETALING JAYA: Nicholas Brendon, the US actor best known for his role as Xander Harris in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, has died at age 54. His family confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that he passed away in his sleep “from natural causes” on March 20, describing him as “passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create”, and asking for privacy as they grieve. Brendon rose to fame in the late 1990s as the wisecracking, loyal Xander in the cult TV series from 1997 to 2003, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar as the titular Buffy. The only member of Buffy’s inner circle without supernatural powers, he became a grounding presence, offering humour and humanity amidst the show’s demons, monsters and apocalyptic stakes. It was a role that resonated deeply with fans, and one that Brendon inhabited with an easy charm that made the character one of the show’s emotional anchors. Born Nicholas Brendon Schultz in Los Angeles on April 12, 1971, he turned to acting in part to cope with a childhood stutter, eventually landing the career-defining role that would shape his public life. After “Buffy”, he continued working in television and film, including a recurring role in “Criminal Minds”, while remaining a familiar face on the convention circuit, where he connected closely with fans of the series. Brendon’s life, however, was not without turbulence. He spoke openly about struggles with depression, addiction and health issues, including a heart condition diagnosed after a cardiac event in 2022. Despite periods of difficulty, those close to him said he had been receiving treatment and remained optimistic in recent years. In later life, he found a renewed sense of purpose through art, particularly painting, which his family described as one of the “purest reflections of who he was”. Tributes from former co-stars quickly followed news of his passing. Former “Buffy” co-star Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow Rosenberg, shared a deeply personal message, writing: “My sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers.” She added that she would think of him “every time I see a rocking chair” and closed simply with: “I love you. RIP.”
