Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin’s claim is baseless and malicious. PETALING JAYA: Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has denied opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin’s claim that a faction in the party is forging closer ties with Pakatan Harapan, describing the allegation as baseless and malicious. Muhyiddin said the “wild allegation” was aimed at hampering Bersatu’s harmonious ties with Perikatan Nasional components, adding that such a matter had never been discussed at any level of the party. He said the Bersatu Supreme Council, which determines the party’s direction and policies, also did not discuss forging ties with PH. “Bersatu’s principles are clear — to defend religion, race and country, and safeguard the people’s welfare. Bersatu’s cooperation with other parties is based on these clear principles. “It’s on the basis of these principles that Bersatu formed PN with PAS before being joined by Gerakan and the Malaysian Indian People’s Party. “PN is the best platform for Bersatu to continue its struggle and Bersatu will not budge from this stand,” the former prime minister said in a statement. Yesterday, Hamzah claimed a faction in Bersatu, comprising those who were previously with PKR, was seeking to forge closer ties with PH, although he did not name anyone in particular. Hamzah, who was sacked from Bersatu last month, is believed to have been singling out figures like Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali, youth wing chief Hilman Idham and associate wing vice-chief R Sri Sanjeevan, among others, who were all formerly from PKR. In 2020, Azmin had led nine PKR MPs in joining Bersatu after their role in the collapse of the PH-led government. This culminated in Muhyiddin being made prime minister. Bersatu was previously a part of PH when the coalition led the federal government from 2018 to 2020.
