Melaka Tengah police chief Christopher Patit said police arrested four men aged between 24 and 32 in Permatang Pasir, Alai, on March 19, less than 24 hours after receiving a report of a motorcycle theft. “Active since January, the group has been involved in at least 12 criminal cases involving the theft of motorcycles and vans as well as break-ins and robberies in Kandang, Bemban, Banda Hilir and Tanjung Minyak. “They stole Yamaha 125ZR and Honda EX5 motorcycles and disassembled them for sale to third parties,” Bernama reported him as saying at the Melaka police headquarters today. Patit said all four men were unemployed, having been released from prison last October, and had criminal records of more than 20 offences related to theft, housebreaking and drugs. Two of them were on the wanted list, and all four tested positive for methamphetamine. He said police seized six motorcycles, a van and special vehicle theft equipment. The case is being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code for vehicle theft, Section 457 for housebreaking, Section 392 for robbery and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug abuse. “The suspects have been remanded until tomorrow to assist in further investigations. Police are also tracking down several other people believed to be linked to this group’s network as buyers of stolen goods,” he said.
