Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director M Kumar said checks with the immigration department confirmed that these witnesses left the country through KLIA between January and February. As of today, statements have been rercorded from 14 witnesses, he said in a statement, urging the public not to speculate on the case. Kumar was providing an update on the investigation, which Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail said is being carried out by Bukit Aman’s classified crimes unit under Section 124B of the Penal Code, which criminalises activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy. This week, at least three individuals were summoned to Bukit Aman as witnesses in connection with the investigation. They are Syaza Shukri from International Islamic University Malaysia; Pushpan Murugiah, CEO of the Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4); and Nizamuddin Hamid, lawyer acting for former finance minister Daim Zainuddin’s widow, Naimah Khalid. C4 said Pushpan was reportedly questioned because his name appeared in an email allegedly relevant to the offence under investigation. Nizamuddin was named in a police report as one of two lawyers present at a meeting with Naimah where the alleged plot was purportedly discussed. Naimah has also denied any involvement in the matter.
