(JPJ pic) PETALING JAYA: A total of 2,384 offences were recorded using road transport department (JPJ) drones during the first three days of a Hari Raya Aidilfitri traffic operation which began on Monday. Four main offences were identified — overtaking on double lanes (715 cases), ignoring traffic lights (627 cases), overtaking on the left (539 cases) and using the emergency lane (503 cases). JPJ enforcement senior director Kifli Ma Hassan said the drone footage will be used as evidence against the offenders, Bernama reported. JPJ will issue an interview notice to the vehicle owners involved, he said after an enforcement operation at the Wilayah Timur JPJ Academy in Kota Bharu last night. Kifli said JPJ has six drone units and plans are being made to expand their use in all future operations. He said 200 traffic offences could be detected using drones in just 45 minutes. “The use of these drones is a proactive measure to record and identify offences that are the cause of accidents. “This approach focuses on safety aspects by ensuring that road users are more disciplined and obey the law.” Kifli said these drones had a zoom function of up to 200 times, allowing vehicle registration numbers to be clearly identified even from a long distance. Kifli said 288 hotspots for a high number of accidents and traffic offences had been identified nationwide. “The three states that recorded the highest number were Kelantan (53 locations), Sarawak (50) and Perak (34). “In Kelantan, the most significant offences detected involved cutting queues and ignoring traffic lights.” He said offenders could make a compound payment within 15 days to enjoy a 50% discount of RM150.
