PKR Youth chief Kamil Munim said private sectors in several nations have already started implementing work-from-home arrangements amid the Middle East conflict, including Vietnam, the Philippines, and Thailand. PETALING JAYA: PKR Youth has urged private sector employers to implement “targeted” work-from-home policies as part of energy saving measures in view of the impact of the Middle East conflict. PKR Youth chief Kamil Munim said employees who do not need to be consistently present at the workplace should be allowed to work from home from time to time. Kamil, the political secretary to finance minister Anwar Ibrahim, added that employers should give workers in urban areas flexible work arrangements to help them manage a potential rise in cost of living. “Our experience in facing the Covid-19 pandemic has proven that flexible work arrangements aren’t an obstruction but a catalyst for productivity. “Through flexible work arrangements, we can achieve better work-life balance while reducing operational expenditure and people’s daily expenses, particularly transport costs. “With the global oil price situation remaining uncertain, work-from-home is also a strategic instrument to reduce fuel subsidy pressures,” he said in a statement. Kamil said private sectors in several nations had already moved in that direction, including Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, as well as countries in Europe. The Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) previously said that work-from-home policies should not apply in all sectors, especially not manufacturing, retail, logistics and services. MEF president Syed Hussain Syed Husman said it should be left to employers, not the government, to decide whether to allow workers to work from home. The government will decide today whether to implement work-from-home arrangements for the public sector.
