How a simple jacket helps worshippers find focus in prayer

These jackets at Masjid Al Mujahirin provide a simple, practical solution to a common distraction during congregational prayers. (Bernama pic) KUANTAN: Hanging neatly near the entrance of Masjid Al Mujahirin in Indera Mahkota here is a row of simple jackets. At first glance, they might seem ordinary; but for many worshippers, these garments have become a quiet solution to an unexpected distraction during congregational prayers. The idea came from a simple observation. Mosque chairman Idros Yahya noticed that many congregants – especially those arriving from work, sports activities, or travelling from outside the area – often wore shirts printed with bold slogans, images or colourful designs on the back. While harmless, such designs could easily distract those standing behind them during prayer. Rather than discouraging worshippers from attending the mosque as dressed as they were, Idros chose a gentler solution. He and the mosque committee decided to provide jackets that worshippers could slip on before joining the prayer rows. “We do not want anyone to feel unwelcome here,” Idros told Bernama. “So instead of telling people what they should not wear, we simply offer jackets they can put on to cover any writing or pictures on their clothing.” The mosque purchased about 20 jackets at a cost of around RM800, placing them near the entrances so they are easy to take before prayers begin. Notices and announcements were also put up to explain the purpose of the initiative. Idros said the idea was partly inspired by his experience working in tourism, where visitors to mosques are often provided with robes to ensure modest attire. “At many state mosques, and even at the National Mosque, visitors are given robes to wear,” he said. “The concept here is similar. Instead of reprimanding anyone, we simply provide something extra so everyone can pray more comfortably and respectfully.” The initiative has been warmly received by congregants. Some have even found an additional benefit – using the jackets to keep warm inside the mosque’s cool prayer hall. The effort has also drawn praise from the Pahang Islamic Religious Department. Its deputy director, Abdul Zaki Zain, described the idea as thoughtful and worth adopting at other mosques across the state.
