The health ministry reminded the public to take frequent water breaks to avoid heat-related illnesses during the current heatwave. PETALING JAYA: The health ministry has urged the public to exercise caution during the ongoing hot spell, urging people to plan outdoor activities carefully to avoid heat-related illnesses. The ministry said that several states – including Kedah, Perlis, Penang, Perak, and Pahang – are experiencing high temperatures, with some areas reaching daily highs of 35 to 40 degrees Celsius for at least three consecutive days. In a statement, the ministry warned that prolonged exposure to extreme heat could cause a range of health issues, from mild fatigue and headaches to severe conditions such as heatstroke, dehydration and even coma. “All individuals exposed to prolonged hot weather are at risk of heat-related illnesses,” it said. “However, children, the elderly, those with chronic diseases, workers exposed to heat, and individuals performing physical activities in hot conditions are at higher risk of severe conditions such as heatstroke. “We advise the public to plan outdoor activities... and avoid peak heat hours between 11am and 4pm.” The ministry also recommended practical measures, including wearing light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing, using hats or umbrellas, and taking frequent water breaks. People are also urged not to leave children in locked vehicles and to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, or muscle cramps occur. Meteorological department director-general Hisham Anip yesterday said the heatwave currently affecting the country is expected to last until June.
