The H&H dance group celebrates ethnic diversity and a healthy lifestyle through movement. KUALA LUMPUR: Two years ago, the song “Serumpun” took Hari Raya by storm, becoming an instant hit thanks its upbeat rhythm and catchy lyrics. Performed by local singer-songwriter Mimifly, the track quickly rose to become a favourite on social media, soundtracking countless short dance videos. Joining in were women who call themselves the H&H (Healthy & Happy) dance group, made up of members aged 50 to 70 from different ethnic backgrounds. The group turns dance into a shared expression of artistry as well as a way to keep physically and mentally healthy. But what sets the women apart is their choice of attire. In their videos, they appear in traditional Southeast Asian outfits, most often the kebaya, adding a touch of cultural pride to each performance. “We uploaded dance videos on social media just for fun, but we never expected them to go viral or receive so many positive comments,” group representative Sugiarti Rizal told FMT. The 56-year-old pointed out that the kebaya is more than a costume – it is a way of keeping heritage alive. “We often wear kebaya or other traditional outfits to add charm to our performances,” she said. “It symbolises the elegance of Southeast Asian women and deserves to be preserved for future generations.” According to Sugiarti, the group was formed in October 2017 by four friends. What began with just five members has since grown into a lively community of about 50. Beyond dance, H&H has become a space where friendships are built across cultures, united by a shared commitment to staying active. “We usually meet every weekend at Taman Tasik Manjalara and Taman Desa to dance and exercise together,” she added. For the members of H&H, age is no barrier to keeping active for better physical and emotional wellbeing. “And during festive occasions like Aidilfitri, we like to dress in traditional outfits to make it more special.” The group’s growing presence on social media sends a simple message: that unity, cultural appreciation, and a healthy lifestyle can go hand in hand, regardless of age or background.
