Economy minister Akmal Nasrullah Nasir said the government continues to maintain a reasonable RON95 price for the public. PETALING JAYA: The government will keep the price of subsidised RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre and has no plans for any drastic changes to the current price or policy, says economy minister Akmal Nasrullah Nasir. He said the current Middle East conflict did not present strong indicators for the government to make drastic changes to its existing policies. “Our ministry is closely observing what’s happening (in the Middle East), but there is no indication for the government to make any drastic change in terms of policy. “The government has implemented a targeted subsidy and continues to maintain a reasonable RON95 price for the public,” he said at a press conference after attending the OGSE100 CEOs Forum 2026 today. On March 1, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government would try to maintain RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre for Malaysians despite global market uncertainty following the US-Israel attacks on Iran. Anwar said Malaysia would be affected by the increase in global oil prices following disruptions to the crucial Strait of Hormuz shipping route, but that the government was determined to maintain the subsidised price of RON95 under the BUDI95 programme. However, Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said the market was beyond the government’s control and that it could not guarantee there would be no increase in price. Akmal said the government was also maintaining its 2026 gross domestic product growth forecast at 4.0-4.5% despite the Middle East conflict. “If any adjustment is needed, Bank Negara Malaysia will make it, but for now, we are proceeding with our 2026 growth target,” he said.
