(File pic) PETALING JAYA: A German woman was fined RM3,000 by the George Town magistrates’ court today after pleading guilty to kicking a policewoman in January. Magistrate Nur Fadrina Zulkhairi ordered Theresa Schlefsky, 34, to serve three months in prison if she failed to pay the fine, Harian Metro reported. She was charged with using criminal force to deter Nurfarhanah Johdi from carrying out her duties at the central police station by kicking the policewoman in the abdomen. The tourist was charged with committing the offence at a coffee shop in the Timur Laut district at around 6.30pm on Jan 14. The charge under Section 353 of the Penal Code is punishable by up to two years in prison, a fine or both, upon conviction. Schlefsky’s lawyer, K Sagana, said her client, who is unemployed, had suffered from schizophrenia since the age of 16 and took medication periodically for the mental illness. She said the German’s actions were caused by a failure to take her medication consistently, and that she had been regretful and apologetic after she stabilised. “Her father and sister are here to attend proceedings and they apologise for the offence she committed,” she added, urging the court to only impose a fine in view of Schlefsky’s mental illness. Schlefsky paid the RM3,000 fine after the sentence was given.
