Finance ministry to block MyKad in alleged RON95 misuse case

The finance ministry said the government will not compromise on any abuse of subsidies at the petrol pump. PETALING JAYA: The finance ministry says it will block the MyKad of the car owner spotted filling subsidised RON95 fuel in large quantities in a viral video. In the video dated today, a couple was seen filling up close to RM230 of RON95 fuel. This allegedly took place at a Petronas station in Skudai, Johor. The couple was seen filling up jerry cans and later filled up the car’s fuel tank as well. In a statement, the ministry said this was clearly illegal as it was an abuse of subsidised fuel, adding that it will step up enforcement action to prevent such irresponsible acts. “The government will not compromise with any sort of leakage or abuse of subsidies, especially during these uncertain times that require stricter control on fuel prices,” it said. The war in the Middle East, which is entering its fourth week, has seen Iran restrict passage through the Strait of Hormuz — through which more than 50% of Malaysia’s supply of oil passes through. The government had raised the price of RON97 petrol by RM1.30 in the past two weeks while diesel in West Malaysia has gone up by RM1.60. The price of non-subsidised RON95 has also gone up by 60 sen. Putrajaya estimates that keeping the subsidised fuel prices will increase its monthly fuel subsidy bill to RM3.2 billion, comprising RM2 billion for RON95 and RM1.2 billion for diesel. Diesel continues to be sold at a subsidised price in East Malaysia.
