(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: Police are investigating the theft of 30 urns containing human ashes from the columbarium of a memorial park in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. Nilai police chief Johari Yahya said a report lodged by the memorial park’s manager on Feb 26 stated that a suspect had contacted the park’s management using an overseas number and claimed to have found the urns. “The suspect then demanded a ransom from the memorial park to return the urns. Police are actively working to trace the suspect,” he said, reported Bernama. Johari said police are obtaining technical assistance from the relevant agencies as the case involved cross-border communication and the use of digital technology. The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft in a building, Section 384 for extortion, and Section 297 for trespassing in a burial place.
