National unity minister Aaron Ago Dagang urged the public to avoid emotional reactions and speculation regarding sensitive issues involving race and religion. PETALING JAYA: National unity minister Aaron Ago Dagang has urged the police to take decisive action against those involved in three recent incidents seen as a threat to Malaysia’s racial and religious harmony. He said his ministry took a serious view of the incidents: the alleged arson of three vehicles belonging to an activist known as Cikgu Chandra; a man’s alleged act of stepping on and damaging the Trishul, a sacred Hindu symbol; and an alleged attack on controversial preacher Zamri Vinoth. “Any form of violence, religious provocation, hatred or extreme action that touches on racial and religious sensitivities is completely unacceptable in a multiracial and multi-religious country like Malaysia,” he said in a statement today. Aaron also said that national harmony must not be compromised by the actions of a few irresponsible individuals. Calling for thorough investigations, he said the authorities must act against the culprits in accordance with the law. “Action against extremist groups attempting to undermine national security must be taken without compromise,” he said. Aaron also appealed to the public not to act emotionally or spread speculation, particularly on social media, when facing sensitive issues involving race and religion. “Any differences of opinion must be addressed through the proper channels and within the framework of the law,” he said. He said Malaysia was built on the principles of unity, mutual respect, and understanding across religions and cultures – values that must be upheld by all. “The ministry will continue to work closely with security agencies, community leaders, and interfaith organisations to ensure that the country’s harmony, peace, and stability are preserved,” Aaron said.
