Cambodian patients are increasingly choosing Malaysia for both preventive and specialised healthcare. (Envato Elements pic) PETALING JAYA: Cambodia has emerged as one of Malaysia’s fastest-growing healthcare travel markets, with patient numbers soaring 219% over the past two years, says the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC). According to data collected, it said 11,690 Cambodian patients sought treatment in Malaysia last year, generating RM29.1 million in healthcare travel revenue, a 220% jump from the previous year. MHTC attributed the surge to stronger engagement in Cambodia, including healthcare roadshows, partnership meetings, and collaborations with medical facilitators and travel agents. The data also showed that Cambodian patients are seeking a wide range of medical needs, from health screening to specialised care in gastroenterology, oncology, ophthalmology, and cardiovascular services. Convenient flights to Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Melaka, plus continuity of care from pre-arrival to post-treatment follow-ups, have made Malaysia a preferred destination, MHTC said. “Beyond the numbers, this growth reflects the trust Cambodian patients have placed in Malaysia’s healthcare system,” MHTC CEO Suriaghandi Suppiah said in a statement today. “This 219% increase demonstrates the collaborative efforts between MHTC, member hospitals, and our partners in Cambodia to ensure a seamless, patient-centred journey from first inquiry to full recovery.” The agency said the growth comes as Malaysia prepares for its first Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026, themed Healing Meets Hospitality, with Cambodia remaining a priority market. MHTC said it will continue to deepen partnerships, expand patient access, and enhance service delivery to support Cambodian patients throughout their healthcare journeys.
