(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Prolonged hot weather has caused the water level at a dam in Kelantan to fall below normal. Berita Harian reported that the reading at the Bukit Kwong dam in Rantau Panjang is 15.47m, more than 1m below the normal level of 16.76m. Based on data from the department of drainage and irrigation, water levels at several major rivers in Kelantan are also below normal, including Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang, which recorded 3.23m compared with its normal level of 5m. The water level at Sungai Golok in Kampung Jenob, Tanah Merah, is also below normal at 18.23m (normal is 19m), as is Sungai Kelantan in Kuala Krai at 15.63m (normal: 17m). In addition, Sungai Galas in Dabong, Kuala Krai, recorded 25.28m (normal: 28m), while Sungai Kelantan at Tambatan Diraja in Kota Bharu stood at 0.23m (normal: 1m). Two other rivers showing below normal water levels are Sungai Melor in Bachok and Sungai Semerak in Pasir Puteh, with readings of 5.29m and 2m, respectively. Earlier today, the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (Mada) said the water level at the Muda dam in Sik, Kedah, has dropped to a worrying low of just 8.04% or 10,050 acre-feet. Mada chairman Ismail Salleh said the dam played a crucial role in collecting water and channelling it to the Pedu dam for irrigation across the Muda agricultural area.
