Auntie Janaki urgently needs help to save 50 street dogs in Jinjang

Auntie Janaki, seen here with her friend Lee Chin Chin, has been looking after these neighbourhood dogs for many years. (Terence Toh @ FMT Lifestyle) KUALA LUMPUR: A dog lover in Jinjang here is in urgent need of the public’s support to help rehome about 50 strays in her care. Known to most people in the community as Auntie Janaki, she has spent the past four years feeding and looking after the neighbourhood dogs on a small patch of land here. Developers now aim to use the site for a condominium project and have given Auntie Janaki until this Sunday (March 15) to leave the area. Finding a new space for her animals has thus far proven difficult. Most shelters are already full, and Auntie Janaki cannot afford the boarding fees, which can range from RM200 to RM500 per dog. She is, therefore, reaching out to anyone who might be able to assist. Thankfully, she already has the help of content creator Sidney Rayos Michael and animal welfare NGO Pawtarian. “Auntie Janaki is extremely worried about what will happen to the dogs after the land is cleared. She is hoping to find a place that can guarantee her dogs will be safe and treated kindly,” Pawtarian president Navwinderan Mahenderan told FMT Lifestyle. The land that needs to be vacated features a simple shelter where the dogs can eat and rest. (Terence Toh @ FMT Lifestyle) According to him, Auntie Janaki, a former nurse in her 60s, depends on her late husband’s RM500 Socso allowance to care for the strays. Helped by her family and friends, she cooks food at home every day to feed the dogs, and also ensures they are neutered and vaccinated. As of press time, Navwin and Sidney are still looking for a new space for the dogs. They have received an offer of shelter in Johor Bahru, but transporting them from Jinjang would be costly and time-consuming. As such, their plan is to temporarily move the dogs to a space in Rawang while they figure out a more permanent arrangement. More immediately, they need transport and cages to relocate the animals by this Sunday. ‘These innocent souls also have the right to live on this earth like the rest of us,’ Auntie Janaki says. (Terence Toh @ FMT Lifestyle) Navwin stressed that any form of assistance would make a meaningful difference for the dogs and the person who has spent years caring for them. “Auntie Janaki has devoted so much of her life to feeding and protecting these animals using what little she has,” he said. “Now she needs the community’s help to ensure the dogs can be moved somewhere safe.” Aunty Janaki herself has a message to share: “Please help these innocent souls. They also have the right to live on this earth like the rest of us.” If you are able to help in any way, contact Navwin at 018-917 9109 or Sidney at 016-984 4941.
