Its chairman, Maszlee Malik, said that while the bureau understands there are calls for a louder stance against the conflict, Anwar’s strategy of quiet engagement has proven effective in encouraging deescalation. “This approach preserves Malaysia’s credibility as a dialogue-focused nation, protects our strategic neutrality with all major powers, and safeguards vital relationships with Gulf Cooperation Council states. It also respects Asean’s consensus-based processes and the delicate balancing efforts of regional players. True influence is not measured by volume but by results,” he said in a statement today. In a post on X yesterday, Anwar said he conveyed Malaysia’s sympathy and solidarity with the people of Iran in a phone call with Iranian foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Friday. “I also extended Malaysia’s condolences for the lives lost, including that of Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei, as well as 165 school students, following the recent attacks in Tehran by the Israeli regime together with the US. “Malaysia reaffirmed its firm stance against any military action that violates the sovereignty of a nation, while also expressing deep concern over the prolonged conflict’s implications for global peace, stability and wellbeing,” he said.
