Shah Alam MP Azli Yusof led discussions at the Shah Alam Amanah retreat last week. (Shah Alam Amanah pic) PETALING JAYA: Amanah is turning its focus on more than 20,000 first-time voters in Shah Alam, whom the party sees as key to retaining the parliamentary constituency in the 16th general election (GE16). Shah Alam Amanah chief Azli Yusof said this group of voters appeared to be more independent, non-partisan and inclined to evaluate issues and policy proposals before deciding whom to back at the polls. “This group demands a different approach – one that is more authentic, fact-based and closer to the realities of their lives,” the Shah Alam MP said in a statement. He added that Shah Alam Amanah had discussed strategies to garner the support of these voters during a retreat last week, assessing voting patterns from past election data. Discussions centred on drawing up an earlier and more structured campaign strategy to engage voters in phases, said Azli. Shah Alam used to be a Barisan Nasional stronghold but fell into PAS’s hands through Khalid Samad in 2008. Khalid was among the “G18” leaders in PAS who later went on to form Amanah. The seat has been in Amanah’s hands since 2015. In the 2022 general election, Azli retained the seat with a convincing majority of 18,095 votes in a four-cornered contest.
