70 Malaysian pilgrims safe after Mecca hotel fire

The foreign ministry said the fire broke out at about 5pm local time at the Hotel Mira Ajyad, where about 70 Malaysian pilgrims were staying under the management of TH Travel, Zahafiz Travel, and Rayhar Travel. It said the Malaysian consulate-general in Jeddah immediately coordinated with Saudi authorities and travel agencies to ensure the safety of the pilgrims. “All three agencies have confirmed that all Malaysian pilgrims under their management are safe and have been accounted for,” it said in a statement. Wisma Putra said the cause of the fire is under investigation, and Saudi authorities have found no evidence of a drone attack or sabotage According to the ministry, guests are not allowed to return to their rooms while safety inspections continue. “If there is a delay in obtaining permission to return to the hotel, the hotel management together with the respective travel agencies will arrange temporary accommodation for affected guests,” it said. The ministry said it will continue to monitor the situation and remain in contact with Saudi authorities and the Malaysian travel agencies to safeguard the welfare of the pilgrims.
