In a Bernama report, Nilai police chief Johari Yahya said police have recorded statements from 10 witnesses in connection with the theft. “The investigation is ongoing, and police are still recording witness statements, including from the memorial park’s staff. “One aspect we are looking at is the potential involvement of insiders. The investigation is still at an early stage, and nothing has been confirmed,” he said. Johari said police were also investigating whether the incident was linked to a previous theft of urns in Kulai. The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft in a building, Section 384 for extortion, and Section 297 for trespassing in a burial place. Earlier today, the New Straits Times reported that “insiders” could be involved in the recent thefts of urns, with Federation of Chinese Cemetery Associations Malaysia chairman Lee Koon Lam saying the nature of the thefts suggested that they were carefully planned with inside help. The incidents include the theft of 22 urns from Perpetual Memorial Park in Kulai, Johor, on March 9; the theft of 30 urns from Xiao En Memorial Park in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, on March 18; and the theft of an undisclosed number of urns from Nirvana Asia Group.
