3 Malaysian doubles pairs through to All England quarters

(EPA Images pic) PETALING JAYA: Three Malaysian doubles pairs have booked quarter-final berths at the prestigious World Super 1000 All England badminton championships. Men’s doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, and women’s doubles duo Pearly Tan-M Thinaah, won their matches in the last 16 at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham early this morning. Malaysia is assured of a quarter-final berth as Aaron-Wooi Yik and Wei Chong-Kai Wun will clash in the quarter-finals. World No 2 pair Aaron-Wooi Yik defeated compatriots Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King 21-15, 18-21, 21-18 in a one-hour match, while the sixth-ranked duo Wei Chong-Kai Wun beat Chiu Hsiang Chieh-Wang Chi Lin 21-14, 21-18 in just 33 minutes. Pearly-Thinaah defeated South Korean pair Lee Seo Jin-Lee Yeon Woo, winning 21-14, 21-14 in 43 minutes. They will take on Indonesia’s Fabriana Dwipuji Kesuma-Meilysa Trias Puspitasari in the last eight. Those who were knocked out in the last 16 included national singles shuttler Leong Jun Hao, who lost to Japanese player Koki Watanabe 9-21, 13-21. Men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani lost to Indonesian pair Muhammad Rian Adrianto-Hidayat Rahmat 21-23, 16-21 in 37 minutes. Kang Khai Xing-Aaron Tai lost 19-21, 17-21 to China’s world No 11 pair Chen Bo Yang-Liu Yi in 48 minutes. Mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie meanwhile last to a Chinese pair last night. No Malaysian representatives made it past the quarter-finals at last year’s All England.
